the fort was given a foundation at the 12th century itself by the late Pandya dynasty, but it was just a Shaiva temple for pilgrimage. after that at the period of Madurai Nayakas came to rule Tamil Nādu, so Muthu Krishnappa Nayakar this fort was continued by Muthuveerappa Nayakar and finally opened by Thirumalai Nayakar. then it was captured by the Mysore kingdom for two generations.
